National Championship Air Races 2005

Reno / Nevada

- by Gerhard Schmid, translation by Jurgen Binnemans -

Aerobatics are a firm component in the daily routine of the Reno Air Races. Between the races there are different exciting aerobatic acts that keep the crowd entertained.

Next to high-power soloists like Mike Mangold and Kent Pietsch, there are each year aerobatic display teams visiting. This year the great Snowbirds of the Canadian Air Force and the well-known USAF Thunderbirds.

Bonanza David Martin proved impressively that a Beech Bonanza is quite suitable for basic aerobatics. That does not mean that each Bonanza pilot is able to fly this display...
A-10 The demonstration of military airplanes is naturally also a part of the flight program - here a A-10 Thunderbolt II in a slow flyby.
Corsair The cherry on the icing is always the elegant display of the famous "Sohio" Super Corsair of Bob Odegard.
F/A-18 The F/A-18 is in the meantime something every air show fan saw. The military demonstrations are always a part of the program. NAS Fallon is evidently in the neighborhood.
Hammack Part of the program each year: Scott Hammack with the jet dragster "Smoke and Thunder".
Rescue A SAR helicopter of the NAVY was always in the proximity. And once daily it offered a small demo.
Pietsch If you see it for the first time, you'll hold your breath... Kent Pietsch flies with his Interstate Cadet ground aerobatics of the finest kind. In the next moment he'll touch the ground with the left wingtip.
Thunderbirds A second display team was also a guest - the "Thunderbirds". Always in eternal competition with the "Blue Angels", the team of US Air Force using F-16 Fighting Falcons.
Pietsch A second Pietsch-display is the "Deadstick" show. He climbs far over the airfield, turns the engine off and does glider aerobatics...
Air Force Heritage Flight Heritage Flights are very popular in the USA. Here the Air Force Heritage Flight with an A-10 and a P-51D Mustang.
Pietsch ...and then lands smack in front of speaker Danny Clisham.
NAVY Heritageflight The NAVY Heritage Flight: Richard Sugden with his Fury in formation with two Bearcats and a Mustang. Although the Mustang actually hasn't much to do with the NAVY ... it still is beautiful.
Snowbirds During Richard Sugden's landing of his unique Fury, the "Snowbirds", the Demonstration team of the Canadian Air Force, with their CT-114 Tutor roll to the start.
Mangold Always breathtaking are Mike Mangold's Aerobatic shows. Here the knife edge pass over the Runway.
Snowbirds The formation "Big Diamond" during the flyover of the Stead airport
Mangold Most of time Mike's doesn't seem to want any wind over his wings. His modified Edge 540 with more than 330 HP has more then sufficient enough power to come out of each flight manoeuvre.
Snowbirds ... And again "Big Diamond" during a large formation role. Outside of the formation another "Snowbird" follows with a cameraman.
Mangold Not even at the ground can Mike take it easy. Even on the field he still demonstrates "ground-acrobatic".
Snowbirds The repertoire of the Snowbirds covers more than 50 different formations.
Harleygirl The friendly Harley Girl was an eye catcher. You could win the Harley, not the girl...
