National Championship Air Races 2006

Reno / Nevada

- by Gerhard Schmid, translated by Jurgen Binnemans -

In the last part of the report about the 43rd annual National Championship Air Races and Air Show in Reno, you will see some colourful and mixed impressions. Press photographers, who make this event world-wide known to the public, pilots and teams and also participants of the Air Shows.

And if you did not make it to Reno in 2006.... here is our    >>>Booktipp

program
pietsch The Airshow programm would not be complete without Kent Pietsch. His Crazy Flying Comedy act is a singular demonstration of perfect control of his airplane. In this picture Kent loses his right aileron.
F/A-18 Military demonstrations are always an important part in the Show programm. Usually the standard types like the F/A-18, F-16 and F-15 are coming but nothing exotic.
soucy Genes Soucy makes white clouds in the clear blue sky whit his Grumman Showcat (Ag Cat). Exceptionally Wing walking Teresa Stokes can't be found on the wing in this display.
firetruck On the historical firetruck the winning racing team is driven along the flight line and presented to the crowds.
hellcat "Minsi III" is the name of Grumman F6F-5 Hellcat, which was brought over by the Southern California Wing of the Commemorative Air Force (CAF).
Bronco Also in 2006 was this beautiful Bronco to be seen again at the Stead airfield.  A more close investigation of the interior reveals its German origin.
usn legacy flight

The USN Legacy Flight shows the rare Grumman Hellcat of the CAF and Dr. Richard Sugden's unique Fury beside the F/A-18.

usaf heritage flight Counterpart to the Legacy Flight is the USAF Heritage Flight with F-15 Eagles, F-4 Phantom II and two P-51D Mustangs.
thunderbirds

Known for their close aerobatic formations the Thunderbirds, the formation display team of the USAF, provided a great show again this year.

travolta Pilot among pilots: John Travolta is a regular guest at the Reno Air Races. In this year he has flown his beautiful Boeing 707 to Reno.
team #86 Only a well oiled team holds it together during the whole racing week in Reno. The team #86 "Czech Mate" in discussion after a test flight.
button - destefani The tall Bob Button (Voodoo) with Bill "Tiger" Destefani (Strega) making some small the talk.
smoot Child crazy: "Czech Mate" pilot Sherman Smoot enjoys together with his youngest fans a successful race.
destefani Bill "Tiger Destefani" belongs with his team Strega to the top favourites of the Unlimited Class. For some years this victory-used racing team owner and pilot are struggling again and again with engine problems.
press Jan (www.airrace.info) and Olivier working on the flight line. The two are - just like Airventure - since years trying to make the Reno Air Races popular in Europe.
press Desert foxes: Photographer colleagues at Pylon 2 waiting for the next race in the hot sun.
Antoine Roels

Antoine Roels (www.iapa.be), aviation photographer with an experience of many years and former official photographer of the Belgian Air Force, at Pylon 8.

lizard Spectator without ticket and photo equipment: Whether the "Lizard" is more surprised of the pilots or the photographers, is still under investigation.
